Scott Trial
"The most famous one-day trial in the world."
130km off-road, 75 sections, since 1914. One of the oldest and most celebrated motorcycle trials events on the planet. Run by the Richmond Motor Club, the Scott Trial winds through the dramatic Yorkshire Dales across a single gruelling day. The legendary Golden Spoons are awarded to the top six finishers. Entry fees go directly to local charities.

Scottish Six Days Trial
The ultimate test of rider and machine.
Six days. 100 miles per day. 30 sections daily. Run by Edinburgh & District Motor Club since 1911, the SSDT is the oldest trial in the world still running on its original course. Fort William is the hub, with riders tackling the wild Scottish Highlands across six consecutive days — rain, mud, rivers and all. A bucket-list event for any trials rider.

Pre-65 Scottish
Classic machines, timeless terrain.
Held the Friday before the SSDT begins, the Pre-65 Scottish is a one-day classic trial for machines built before 1965 — traditional twinshocks and vintage iron only. Kinlochleven provides the stunning Highland backdrop. The perfect warm-up for SSDT week, with a distinctly old-school atmosphere that celebrates the heritage of the sport.

Getting into trials

Everything you need to know to start motorcycle trials in Great Britain

ACU Licence
You need an ACU licence to compete. 2026 prices:
Competition Licence: £98/year
Club Trial Registration: £35/year
National Trial Registration: £50/year
All include personal accident insurance. Apply via acu.org.uk.
What do you need?
ACU licence — required to compete in any official event.
Trials bike — second-hand from £1,500–3,000. Modern 250–300cc or electric.
Proper trials boots — NOT enduro boots. Sidi, Alpinestars, TCX.
Helmet & gloves — open-face or full-face, gloves mandatory.
Where to start?
Find your nearest club (see list above) and contact them — most clubs welcome beginners at club-level events. Bumpy's Trials Training offers beginner and intermediate coaching sessions. Trials Training Wales runs youth programmes. Your local ACU club will point you in the right direction.
What age can I start?
Motorcycle trials is possible from age 7 in the youth championships. Trials Training Wales takes children from age 4 on small electric and petrol bikes. There's no upper age limit — many riders compete well into their 60s and 70s. No road licence required at any age.
How much does it cost?
Bike: second-hand from ~£1,500 for a reliable beginner machine.
Kit: helmet, gloves, boots from ~£200–400 for basic setup.
Entry fees: club events typically £15–25 per day.
Licence: from £35/year (club registration).
Club vs. championship events
Start with club-level events — relaxed, friendly, multiple ability classes from White (complete beginner) to Expert. Once confident, step up to ACU regional events. The Trial GB championship is the top national level. Youth championships run from age 7+ with dedicated junior classes at every round.

Retired legend · MBE
Twelve-time World Trial Champion. MBE. From Silsden, Yorkshire. Lampkin is the greatest British motorcycle trials rider of all time and one of the most decorated trials athletes in history — winning the world title consecutively from 1997 to 2003, then returning to win further titles. His name is synonymous with the sport.
